The first record of 2P Encke, a 4.8Km wide comet that orbits the Sun every 3.3 years, was in 1786, by Pierre Méchain, of Paris, France. It was Mr. J.F. Encke, who in 1819, published his conclusion that the comet seen every 3.3 years by numerous observers around the World since 1786, was 2p Encke (named after J.F. Encke).
Comet 2P Encke’s debris (A Flare for Dispersion ) rains upon Planet Earth every years in meteor showers known as the Taurids. It is hypothesized that the larger cataclysmic comets that have struck the Planet Earth in the past were either from Encke or from the same larger source where Encke originated from.
